Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has outlined the criteria behind his squad selection for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, focusing on current form, tactical understanding, versatility, and mental resilience.

The squad reflects McCarthy’s holistic approach to team building, combining players who bring leadership, tactical intelligence, and versatility with those who have shown consistency and form at the club level.

“Each call-up is the result of careful observation, ensuring that every member can contribute immediately while fitting seamlessly into the team’s strategic and competitive framework," McCarthy said.

McCarthy emphasised that meritocracy drives his decisions, rewarding players who demonstrate discipline, focus, and the ability to read the game.

"We are choosing players who are fit, focused, and ready to contribute immediately. Talent is important, but preparation and mindset are key," McCarthy said.

Beyond raw skill, he looks for players who understand tactical instructions, can adapt to different roles, and respond to in-game challenges, ensuring Kenya has flexibility against diverse opponents. While the squad includes experienced internationals, McCarthy highlighted leadership both on and off the pitch as a selection factor.

Veterans guide younger teammates in training and matches, setting standards for discipline, focus, and professionalism. "Veterans provide leadership, while all players must demonstrate accountability and commitment. Every individual contributes to team cohesion," he added.

Club performance plays a major role in McCarthy’s selections. Players performing consistently in domestic and international leagues are given priority, with fitness levels carefully monitored. "Current form matters. Players must prove their readiness through club performances and in training sessions with the national team," McCarthy explained.

McCarthy values players who can perform in multiple positions, giving the team options to adapt during matches. This allows Kenya to adjust formations, cover injuries, and respond to opponent strategies without losing cohesion. "Tactical adaptability is crucial. We need players who can switch roles seamlessly and maintain balance on the field," McCarthy said.

Kenya’s World Cup qualifiers have been a mix of results. The team lost 2-1 to Gabon, rebounded with a 5-0 victory over Seychelles, drew 1-1 with Burundi, held Cote d'Ivoire to a barren draw, tied 3-3 with The Gambia, and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Gabon in the final match.

These results show areas for improvement in defensive organisation, finishing, and game management, while also highlighting Kenya’s potential to compete against strong regional rivals. McCarthy’s squad aims to address these tactical weaknesses while maintaining an attacking threat.

The upcoming qualifiers against Gambia and Seychelles are crucial tests of team cohesion, tactical discipline, and mental fortitude.

McCarthy’s selections ensure the team is balanced, competitive, and prepared for varied challenges. "Every player selected has earned their place. We are ready to test ourselves and grow as a team," McCarthy emphasised.

McCarthy stresses that mental strength and professionalism are just as important as technical ability. Players must handle pressure situations, recover from setbacks, and remain focused on team objectives. "International football is as much about the mind as it is about skill. Players who can perform under pressure are invaluable," he noted.

The squad not only targets immediate results but also prepares Kenya for upcoming tournaments like CHAN 2026 and Afcon 2027.
