Menengai Oilers’ centre Samuel Owvamu will make his full international debut when Kenya Simbas face Algeria in the bronze medal match of the Africa Cup on Saturday.
Team manager Jimmi Mnene said the technical bench is keen to give the duo minutes against the North Africans.
“The two have trained well with the rest of the squad and this being the final match of the tournament, they will have a role to play. I am confident they will add value to the team as we look at finishing the tournament strongly,” said Mnene.
The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2027 World Cup in Australia. However, Kenya are out of the running after falling 29-23 to Zimbabwe on Sunday. Kenya beat Uganda 32-24 in the opener on July 8.
Mnene said they are addressing mistakes witnessed in the loss against the Sables, especially discipline and game management.
“We failed to fire a shot at the Sables in the second half, especially in the third quarter. In contrast, our opponents played in the right areas and won penalties at the breakdown, which they capitalised on to score crucial points,” added Mnene, hinting at changes in the backline.
“It’s something the technical bench is considering. The backs did not play to their best against Zimbabwe. We are looking at options and the best combinations for Saturday’s match.”
The two sides will meet for the second successive year. The North Africans stunned Kenya in last year’s semifinals, winning 22-20 to set up a final against Zimbabwe, which they lost 27-3.
“They are a quality side, very abrasive and physical and have some players plying their trade in France. However, the boys have vowed to finish the tournament strongly. We are relishing the battle,” observed Mnene.
The Simbas matchday 23 will be named on Thursday.
The final of the week-long championship pits Namibia against Zimbabwe. The winner will seal a ticket to 2027.
Hosts Uganda face Côte d’Ivoire while Senegal take on Morocco in the classification matches.
