AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani has said they have sharpened their talons adequately to maul Gor Mahia in their highly anticipated encounter at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

With league points and bragging rights on the line, both teams are primed for a fierce confrontation that promises to capture the nation’s undivided attention.

The historical context of this rivalry can’t be understated. Both clubs boast rich legacies, with Gor Ma- hia holding a slight edge in head-to-head encounters.

They currently sit higher on the KPL log, a position that reflects their consistent performance throughout the season. Yet, as Ambani aptly noted, the past statistics will mean little once the whistle blows.

“Expect a raging battle,” he warned, emphasising that the path to victory will not be an easy one for Gor Mahia. “We have prepared well for Sunday’s encounter. It is a match that we had been looking forward to after two previous postponements,” Ambani said.

The psychological aspect of the game can’t be overlooked. The players are aware that they are not merely fighting for points. The derby has always been a fierce contest for bragging rights.

“We are going for a win. The match holds a special place in the hearts of our fans, and we are determined to make them proud by all means,” he added.

For AFC Leopards, the journey to this derby has been fraught with challenges. Apart from a narrow victory over Mara Sugar on February 15, their subsequent fixtures have been less than stellar.

Barren draws against Sofapaka and the league leaders, Kenya Police, have left fans yearning for a return to form. The most recent encounter—a one-all draw against Shabana—has only added to the pressure.

Yet, Ambani remains optimistic, asserting that these results do not reflect the full potential of his squad.

“The league has entered a very c o m p e t i t i v e phase, and all the teams are either battling for the title or fighting hard to escape relegation. We registered draws against very tough opponents,” Ambani said.

On the other side of the pitch, Gor Mahia have found their rhythm in recent weeks. With three consecutive victories, including a commanding 5-0 win over Division One side Githurai Allstars in the FKF Cup, their confidence is palpable.

They have showcased an attacking prowess that has left opponents reeling and their recent form suggests they are a force to be reckoned with.

Currently sitting third on the KPL log with 42 points, Gor Mahia are eager to capitalise on their momentum and secure maximum points against their arch-rivals.

As the teams prepare to face off, the tactical battle between the coaches will be a focal point. The Leopards will likely adopt a high-pressing strategy, seeking to disrupt their opponents’ rhythm and capitalise on any mistakes.

The midfield battle will be crucial, with both teams possessing dynamic play-makers capable of dictating the pace of the game.
