Kenyan health professionals are now globally competitive after Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) received the ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) accreditation.
The ISO/IEC 17024:2012 accreditation highlights KMPDC’s commitment to upholding the highest global standards in the certification of healthcare professionals.
ISO/IEC 17024:2012 is an internationally recognised standard that ensures organisations responsible for certifying professionals follow transparent, fair, and competency-based assessments.
By achieving the accreditation, KMPDC guarantees that medical practitioners, dentists, and community oral health officers in Kenya meet rigorous benchmarks. KMPDC registers and licenses all medical and dental practitioners and also all the health facilities in the country.
Addressing a commemorative event at the KMPDC complex, KMPDC chairperson Prof.Stanley Khainga, KMPDC CEO Dr. David Kariuki, and Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS) CEO Dr. Walter Ongeti highlighted the significance of the achievement.
Khainga emphasised that the milestone represents a commitment to continuous improvement.
“This accreditation cements our dedication to best practices. We will uphold these standards while embracing innovation to further enhance healthcare regulation,” he stated.
Kariuki underscored the long-term impact of the accreditation.
“This not only boosts the credibility of our licensing process but also ensures that our healthcare professionals have a competitive edge in international practice, allowing them to serve beyond our borders with nominal barriers,” he stated.
Ongeti noted that KMPDC’s success serves as a blueprint for other African regulatory bodies, proving that local institutions can align with international best practices.
By adopting these world-class standards, KMPDC reinforces public confidence in Kenya’s healthcare system and supporting the country’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
Patients can now be assured that medical practitioners are assessed through a rigorous and transparent process, ensuring their competence and ethical responsibility.
KENAS is the National Accreditation Body for Kenya. They assess and accredit organisations that provide certification, medical testing, inspection, testing, calibration, and proficiency testing, validation, and verification services.
KMPDC pledged to expand its regulatory role, strengthening Kenya’s position as a global leader in healthcare standards.
