Ol Kalou goes to the polls today in a by-election that has evolved into much more than a contest for a parliamentary seat. It is a high-stakes political duel between President William Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, with each side eager to prove who truly commands the Mt Kenya region.
A DCP victory will bolster Gachagua's claim as the region's political kingpin. A Kenya Kwanza win will reinforce President Ruto's assertion that he still enjoys the confidence of Mt Kenya voters.
But while politicians seek bragging rights, voters must remember that they are electing a leader, not settling political scores. Their choice should be guided by competence, integrity, and commitment to public service—not party slogans or personality cults.
Sadly, the campaign has been blighted by violence, intimidation, and shameless vote-buying. Such practices insult democracy and reduce citizens to commodities whose future can be purchased for a few thousand shillings.
The people of Ol Kalou have an opportunity to send a powerful message that leadership is earned through ideas and character, not money and muscle. They should reject handouts, shun violence and refuse to be manipulated by ethnic or political emotions.
Today's vote will echo far beyond Nyandarua. Let every ballot reflect hope instead of fear, conviction instead of coercion, and wisdom instead of a full stomach. The future of Ol Kalou is worth far more than the price of a bribe.
