The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service is inviting applications from qualified students interested in training to become diploma teachers.

The service says courses available across public teacher training colleges (TTCs) are Diploma in Primary Teacher Education and Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education.

"The student portal is open for application to Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs), September 2025 intake," KUCCPS said in a notice on March 6.

The service said the deadline for applications is Thursday, March 20, 2025.

Applications must be submitted online via the student portal, students.kuccps.net.

Interested students needing guidance in submitting their application can visit any nearby Huduma Center for assistance.

All pre-service training for primary school teachers is now at the diploma level following the phasing out of certificates in primary teacher education, commonly known as P1.

P1 qualification holders are expected to leverage the opportunity and apply for enrollment to upgrade their qualification to diploma.

Enhancing teacher-student ratio across all public primary and secondary schools is among the government's priority projects as President William Ruto seeks to cement his legacy before the lapse of his first term.

Already, the National Treasury, in its budget plans released in January, indicated that plans were underway for Ruto to hire 120,000 teachers in the next three years, a move that would eventually create room for more teachers to be trained.

Treasury disclosures showed that 12,000 teachers would initially be hired, half of them on permanent and pensionable terms and another 6,000 as interns.

The hiring would be facilitated under the Kenya Primary Education Equity in Learning Programme.

The secondary education quality improvement project would absorb another 108,000 in the next three financial years.

The education sector working report shows that 18,000 would be hired on permanent and pensionable terms next financial year, and a similar number would be hired in the subsequent two fiscal years.

Should Treasury approve the budget proposal by the education stakeholders, a further 18,000 teachers would be hired as interns.

Treasury disclosures show that a similar number is planned for fiscal years 2026-27 and 2027-28.
