Menopause: What you should know/ROSA MUMANYI

As women age, menopause marks a major transition in their reproductive health.

It is officially diagnosed when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the average age of menopause is around 52 years, although it can occur earlier in some women due to genetics, certain medical treatments or surgery.

Menopause is a natural part of ageing and occurs in three stages: perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause.

The experience varies from one woman to another, with symptoms and their severity differing widely.

The transition is caused by a decline in reproductive hormones and signals the end of a woman’s reproductive years.

Beyond common symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and mood changes, menopause can also increase the risk of certain health conditions, including heart disease.

Health experts encourage women to seek medical advice if symptoms interfere with daily life, as lifestyle changes and treatment options can help manage the transition and improve overall well-being.
