A recent report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has highlighted the demographic breakdown of street families across the country, drawing from the 2025 National Census of Street Families Report.

The data reveals critical insights into the gender and age distribution of Kenya's street population.

According to the findings, males make up the vast majority of individuals living on the streets, accounting for 78.6 per cent of the total population.

Females comprise 21.4 per cent, while intersex individuals represent a small minority at 0.04 per cent.

Geographically, Nairobi City County records the highest concentration of this population. The capital city holds the largest share of both male and female street persons, accounting for 26.6 per cent of all males and 24.5 per cent of all females identified nationally.

Age-related data indicates that the street population is predominantly young. More than half of the individuals, exactly 50.4 per cent, fall within the youth category, which includes those aged between 18 and 34 years.

Children aged 0 to 17 years represent the second-largest group, making up 26.1 per cent of the population. Meanwhile, adults aged 35 years and above comprise the remaining 22.6 per cent of the documented street population.
