Solar energy recorded the biggest increase in global electricity generation between 2024 and 2025, reinforcing its position as the fastest-growing source of power, according to the Global Energy Review 2026 Report.

The report shows solar photovoltaic (PV) generation rose from about 450 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2024 to approximately 600 TWh in 2025, outpacing all other energy sources.

Wind power also registered modest growth, while electricity generation from coal declined sharply, shifting from a net increase in 2024 to a contraction in 2025.

Natural gas posted only a slight rise in 2025 compared with the previous year, while hydropower growth slowed significantly after a stronger performance in 2024. Nuclear power also expanded, though at a slower pace than solar.
