County governments spent Sh13.17 billion on domestic and foreign travel during the first nine months of the 2025/26 financial year.
This is according to the Controller of Budget's County Governments Budget Implementation Review report.
Nairobi recorded the highest expenditure at Sh1.55 billion, accounting for the largest share of travel spending among the 47 counties.
Kitui followed with Sh523.41 million, ahead of Meru (Sh515.83 million), West Pokot (Sh504.28 million) and Kiambu (Sh477.54 million).
Samburu, Bungoma, Tana River and Kajiado also ranked among the counties with the highest travel expenditure during the review period.
The report highlights travel costs as part of counties' recurrent expenditure, covering both local and international official trips.
The spending has continued to attract public scrutiny as concerns grow over prudent use of public funds and the need to prioritise service delivery and development projects.
The findings offer insight into how county governments allocated resources during the first three quarters of the financial year.
