History of Mother's Day/WILLIAM WANYOIKE

Mother's Day is a special occasion dedicated to honouring mothers and recognising their role in families and society.

While the modern celebration is widely associated with the United States, the tradition of honouring mothers dates back to ancient Greek and Roman festivals held for mother goddesses.

The observance evolved in the 16th century when people returned to their “mother church” and spent time with their mothers.

Modern Mother’s Day later emerged in the US in the early 20th century, with the first official celebration held in West Virginia in 1908.

In 1914, then US President Woodrow Wilson declared it a national holiday.

Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated globally, although dates vary from country to country.

In Kenya, it is marked on May 10 this year. The 2026 theme, “Motherhood: Stewardship that Shapes Generations,” highlights the enduring influence of mothers in shaping families and communities.
