In Summary

Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is an allergic reaction that affects the nose when you're exposed to allergens like pollen, dust mites, mould, or pet dander.

Allergic rhinitis happens when your immune system overreacts to allergens. When you breathe them in, your body releases chemicals like histamine, causing symptoms in the nose, eyes, throat, and more.

When to see a doctor: Symptoms are persistent or worsen, over-the-counter meds don’t help and if you suspect asthma or sinus infections are involved.
