History of International Women's Day
International Women's Day has been observed since the early 1900s.

Women's oppression and inequality spurred women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change.

In 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.

Women continued to celebrate National Woman's Day (NWD) - first observed across the United States on February 28, 1909 - on the last Sunday of February until 1913.

By the turn of the new millennium in 2000 to date, focus on women empowerment has continued by celebrating and making visible the achievements of women.

The day is celebrated annually on March 8.
