'Niko Kadi' mobiliser Allans Ademba was reportedly arrested on Thursday while covering the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
Police said the action was taken over what they described as concerns about possible incitement.
Officers involved in the operation claimed the activist had shared social media posts they viewed as potentially inciting in relation to the by-election.
Police said they were engaging him as they determined the way forward.
"The posts he is making may lead to a problem. It is a mitigation," said an officer in the area.
In a post on his X account, Ademba claimed he had been apprehended in Ol Kalou and taken to the Ol Kalou DCI offices.
"I've been arrested. Niko Ol Kalau DCI..." he posted.
Ademba did not immediately provide further details about the reported arrest or specify where exactly he was being held.
Earlier, Ademba had shared photos indicating he was in Ol Kalou, where he claimed that only people who voted in the 2022 General Election were being allowed to vote in the ongoing by-election.
According to an earlier post on his X account, he also claimed that newly registered voters were not being allowed to vote under IEBC rules.
"Ol Kalau residents have turned out in large numbers to vote. NOTE: Only those who voted in 2022 are being allowed to vote. The newly registered voters are not allowed to vote as per the IEBC Rules."
At 7.37 am, Ademba also shared a video that appeared to show voters lining up at the AIC polling station.
More than 1,000 police officers had been deployed to provide security during the by-election.
