EALA MP Kanini Kega has claimed that unidentified armed men attempted to kill or abduct him near Ol Kalou during an incident on Monday.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Kega described the incident as the most terrifying moment of his life and said his driver's quick reaction allowed them to drive away.

"Yesterday was a turning point in my life. I saw death with my own eyes," Kega said.

"There is no police officer who can brandish a gun without the intention of shooting. It is only within a split second that my driver was able to swerve and drive away."

Kega alleged that unidentified armed men pursued his vehicle in broad daylight about 500 metres from Ol Kalou town.

"They were doing it in broad daylight, in front of people, where they were trying to abduct us or kill us," he said.

Despite the incident, Kega said he would not be intimidated into leaving the constituency and would remain to protect the votes cast for his preferred candidate.

"We all have a country to protect, but we are not going to allow any intimidation. I am not going to leave Ol Kalou. We are going to protect the votes that we have earned over the last 60 days," he said.

Kega alleged that while in hiding after the incident, he called Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to seek an explanation over what he alleged was the pursuit by police officers.

"I asked him, 'Why are your people pursuing me? Why do they want to kill me? I have not committed any offence,'" he said.

According to Kega, the Inspector General denied deploying officers to trail him.

"He told me there are no people that we have sent. But I told him these were police officers because I saw them," Kega claimed.

Kega said the response led him to believe the officers involved may have been operating outside the official chain of command.

"It seems these are officers who are getting commands from elsewhere because when the Inspector General contacted the local police commanders, they were also shocked that officers were operating in their jurisdiction whom they did not know," he alleged.

Kega thanked local police officers, including the area OCPD and OCS, for responding after the incident was reported.

However, Kega alleged that those pursuing him had a clear mission.

"From where I sit, the people pursuing me had one mission, either to kill me or abduct me. If you see the kind of damage they did to my vehicle, it tells you the bitterness and anger they had because they failed to accomplish the mission they had been sent to do," he said.

The National Police Service had not responded to Kega's allegations by the time of publication.
