Court extends detention of 6 in fake Madaraka Express ticket case

A court in Kibera has granted police 48 more hours to continue detaining six suspects arrested over an alleged fake Madaraka Express ticket booking fraud in Nairobi.

Chief Magistrate S. Ayambo, sitting at the Kibera Law Courts, issued the orders after an investigating officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations' Serious Crime Unit filed Miscellaneous Application E691 of 2026 on Tuesday, seeking more time to detain the suspects to conclude investigations before they are formally charged.

The suspects were presented before Ayambo but did not take plea.

Ayambo granted the application and ordered that the suspects return to court on July 16, 2026, for plea taking and to be charged.

Court documents seen by the Star indicate that the Miscellaneous Application was made under Article 243 of the Constitution, 2010, Section 35 of the National Police Service Act, Chapter 84 of the Laws of Kenya, Sections 118 and 121(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code, Section 48 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, and Chapter 79C of the Laws of Kenya.

Ayambo ordered that the suspects continue to be held at Muthaiga Police Station, where they had been detained before being presented to court.

He also directed that an age assessment be conducted on the second respondent before all the suspects are jointly charged.

"It is hereby ordered that the accused person be taken for age assessment at Kenyatta National Hospital or Mbagathi Hospital and a report be filed in court," Ayambo ordered.

A DCI detective familiar with the investigations told the Star that the suspects were arrested in connection with an alleged fake Madaraka Express ticket booking scheme targeting unsuspecting members of the public.

He said the arrests followed investigations into fraudulent online booking platforms and individuals allegedly impersonating Kenya Railways to defraud members of the public.
