President William Ruto has warned that Artificial Intelligence and digital platforms are increasingly being used to spread misinformation and manipulate public discourse.

He said the trend is raising concern over the growing impact of false information in the digital age.

Speaking on the role of technology in modern communication on Monday, the President said digital platforms have expanded access to information. He added that they have also created avenues for the rapid spread of misleading content.

According to him, AI-generated material and coordinated online campaigns are being used to distort facts, influence public opinion and sow division among citizens.

“Artificial Intelligence and digital platforms have been used to spread misinformation and manipulate public discord,” President Ruto said.

Ruto has previously cautioned Kenyans against relying entirely on social media for information. He said digital spaces are increasingly saturated with fake news, propaganda and manipulated content.

He has urged citizens to verify information through credible sources before sharing it online.

The President has maintained that misinformation campaigns can undermine trust in institutions, fuel unnecessary tensions and create confusion among the public.

He said deliberate attempts to distort information have become a major challenge in the digital era. He said this requires collective responsibility from governments, technology companies, media organisations and citizens.
