Central Kenya leaders allied to President William Ruto have intensified campaigns for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina in the upcoming Ol-Kalou by-election, pledging a united front to retain the seat for the ruling party.
The leaders, led by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, have been criss-crossing the constituency drumming up support for Muchina, who won the UDA nominations and is now flying the party’s flag in the contest.
The seat fell vacant following the death of area Member of Parliament Njuguna Kiaraho, prompting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to gazette the constituency for a by-election.
Waiguru said the ruling party was confident of victory, arguing that the late MP had been a strong supporter of the Kenya Kwanza administration and that continuity in leadership was critical for development.
“Continuity is critical in development matters. Our party candidate, Muchina, is best placed to take over the development works started by the late MP across social and economic sectors,” she said.
She further urged residents to turn out in large numbers and support the UDA candidate, saying the government would work closely with him to accelerate development initiatives in the constituency.
Waiguru added that the Ruto administration remained committed to empowering residents through infrastructure and economic programmes already underway in the region.
“We will closely work with the MP to fast-track development initiatives in the constituency to empower the residents,” she said.
Nyandarua Women Representative Faith Gitau cautioned opposition leaders against what she termed divisive politics, saying the focus should remain on development delivery.
She urged residents to support the government’s agenda, arguing that national programmes required cooperation between local leaders and the national administration.
Other leaders who accompanied the campaign trail included Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari, Kiambu Women Representative Anne Wamuratha, Nominated MP Sabina Chege, Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Kirinyaga Assembly Speaker Murimi Muteti and a section of Members of County Assembly.
The leaders echoed Waiguru’s sentiments, saying the party’s support base in the Mount Kenya region remained strong and intact ahead of the by-election.
They expressed optimism that UDA would retain the seat, pointing to what they described as strong grassroots mobilisation and continued backing of the ruling party in the region.
The leaders also urged voters to maintain support for the government to ensure ongoing development projects are completed and expanded under the next legislator.
Waiguru said the campaign team would continue holding rallies across the constituency as the party seeks to consolidate support ahead of the polls scheduled for next month.
