KeNHA/FILEThe Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has extended by 10 days the deadline for transporters applying for exemption permits, following a surge in applications after the restoration of its online permit system.
The extension is aimed at easing delays and allowing the Authority to clear a growing backlog of applications while optimising system performance.
KeNHA said the permit application portal is now fully operational and accessible through https://permits.kenha.co.ke, urging transporters to continue submitting their requests through the platform.
Since the system went live, the Authority said it has received a high volume of applications, prompting intensified verification and approval processes by its technical teams working around the clock.
To manage the workload and ensure continuity of cargo movement, KeNHA announced an additional 10-day extension for both expired permit holders and new applicants.
“KeNHA stated that trucks operating under expired permits will be allowed to continue transporting cargo covered under the original permit up to June 19, 2026,” the Authority said.
The extension also applies to new applicants, who have been granted additional time to submit their exemption permit applications through the online portal.
KeNHA stated that the measure is intended to prevent disruptions in transport operations while ensuring all applications are processed efficiently under the restored digital system.
The Authority noted that its verification and approval teams are working continuously alongside system optimisation efforts to handle the increased demand.
It added that the decision is part of efforts to enhance service delivery, streamline permit issuance and support smooth movement of goods along national highways.
Transporters have been encouraged to take advantage of the restored system and comply with the updated timelines to avoid delays in approvals.
KeNHA also provided its customer support channels, including a toll-free line, email contacts and social media platforms, for users requiring assistance during the application process.
The Authority emphasised that the extension is temporary and aimed at stabilising the system as normal processing resumes following the high application load.
