Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has likened his political journey under the mentorship of ODM Raila Odinga to President William Ruto’s years under the tutelage of the late President Daniel Moi.

Junet said he too is positioning himself to inherit the leadership mantle.

"You know, people who work with the old men are the ones who succeed. The way you worked with Moi is the same way I’m working with Baba. When he retires, he can leave it for me, then I can now become the leader of ODM,” Junet said, drawing applause.

Speaking during a fundraiser for the Eltabashi Educational Trust in Nairobi, Junet assured the gathering that the ODM leader remains firmly connected to the Muslim community.

Ruto was the chief guest during the event.

The National Assembly minority leader also conveyed greetings from Raila, who he said is currently out of the country.

“Your Excellency, I have come here also to bring the greetings of Baba, he is out of the country. He has told me he's part and parcel of the Muslim community," he said.

Eltabashi Educational Trust is a program designed to support Madarasas in Mandera County.

The legislator went on to defend the Somali community against critics who have questioned their growing political influence.

He described them as industrious citizens who make a huge contribution to the national economy.

“There are people in this country who are not happy about your relationship with the Somali community. But these are hardworking people who run businesses and generate a lot for the GDP. They are part and parcel of our broad-based government,” he said.

Junet predicted that the Somali community will be a decisive force in the next General Election.

“From what I am seeing, their numbers will determine the coming election. Now that they are on board, we shall move together to 2027 and beyond, God willing,” he added

The event brought together leaders, scholars, and members of the Somali community in support of education and empowerment initiatives.

In his address, Ruto applauded the Trust’s dedication to supporting vulnerable children in Northern Kenya to access education.

"The more education is made accessible to our children, the more empowered, equal and prosperous we become," he said.
