Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet compete in the 5000m at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, September 20, 2025.
Beatrice Chebet produced a stunning late burst of speed to win gold in the women’s 5000m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, clocking 14:54.36 in a dramatic sprint finish on Saturday.
The Kenyan star held off compatriot and close friend Faith Kipyegon, who settled for silver in a season’s best 14:55.07 after pushing her all the way to the line.
Italy’s Nadia Battocletti, runner-up in the 10,000m, claimed bronze in 14:55.42 after a composed race that saw her time her kick to perfection.
The race was relatively slow but highly tactical, with Kipyegon and Chebet shadowing Battocletti on the final lap before unleashing their trademark finishing speed.
In the closing stretch, Chebet powered clear to seal a Kenyan 1-2 and underline her dominance on the global stage.
The victory saw Chebet complete the distance double, having already won the 10,000m on the opening day of the championships.
It mirrors her feat at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she also swept both long-distance titles.
For Kipyegon, the silver adds to the 1500m gold she secured earlier in the week, while Battocletti’s bronze ensures all three podium finishers walked away with a second medal from these championships.
