Tens of residents spent their night in the cold after a fire razed a two-storey building, a residential house with commercial shops, in Athi River, Machakos county, on Thursday.

Police said goods of unknown value were destroyed in the fire, which reportedly started at around 8.30 pm.

A local provincial administrator reported the matter to the Athi River police station as a fire incident at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday.

The fire happened at the California Njoguini area, prompting officers from the station, led by the Subcounty security team alongside Directorate of Criminal Investigations personnel and fire brigade from the Machakos County Government to rush to the scene.

The fire is estimated to have started at around 8.30 pm.

The fire brigade managed to contain it.

Police said there were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

"Unknown value of goods have been destroyed.

The scene was cordoned off for documentation by Scenes of Crime personnel from Kitengela police station.

Police said the case is pending under investigation.

DCI detectives attached to the Athi River police station have launched investigations into the incident.
