The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a planned system maintenance exercise that will temporarily disrupt access to its online tax filing platform, iTax.

In a notice issued Wednesday, KRA said the maintenance will begin Thursday, September 18, 2025, at 10pm and end Friday, September 19, at 2am.

During this four-hour window, the iTax system will be unavailable to all users.

“The scheduled downtime is necessary to enhance system performance and improve service delivery to taxpayers,” the authority stated.

This, while expressing regret for any inconvenience that may be caused.

The maintenance is expected to affect individuals and businesses who rely on the iTax system for filing returns, generating payment slips, and accessing other tax-related services.

The notice is part of the taxman’s ongoing efforts to keep its digital infrastructure up to date and reliable.

In recent years, KRA has heavily invested in digital transformation to streamline revenue collection, widen the tax base, and minimise manual processes.

KRA assured users that normal services will resume immediately after the maintenance window closes.

iTax is an online platform that allows taxpayers to handle all their tax obligations digitally.

Through the system, individuals and businesses are able to register for different types of taxes, such as income tax, PAYE, or VAT, file their tax returns, generate payment slips, and make payments through banks or mobile money channels.

The platform also provides access to services like applying for tax compliance certificates and updating taxpayer information.

It was introduced to replace the old manual system, which required taxpayers to physically visit KRA offices and fill out paper forms.

By moving the process online, iTax has made it faster, more convenient, and more transparent for people to meet their tax responsibilities.

Today, nearly every taxpayer in Kenya interacts with iTax at least once a year when filing returns, and many use it regularly for day-to-day compliance.
