Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two women in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area with fake currency valued at Sh70 million.
In a statement on Friday, the DCI said the operation was based on solid intelligence that led officers to the suspects.
“Acting on solid intelligence, detectives conducted a well-coordinated operation in Upper Hill where they arrested the female suspects,” the DCI said.
A search revealed bundles of $100 denomination notes hidden in a handbag.
A further count at the DCI Nairobi Area headquarters confirmed the amount to be USD 560,000, all in counterfeit currency.
The arrests have raised concerns about the existence of a wider criminal network circulating fake foreign notes within and beyond Nairobi.
The two suspects are in custody as detectives prepare charges ahead of their arraignment.
In a separate operation in Kisii South Sub-County, police intercepted a suspected drug trafficker along the Migori–Kisumu Highway.
Officers from Gesonso Police Station mounted a roadblock and flagged down a dark grey Toyota Sienta.
The driver defied orders and rammed over metal spikes in an attempt to escape.
A chase ensued before the vehicle was immobilised after its
tyres were deflated. Ndung’u was arrested as he attempted to flee on foot.
A search of the vehicle uncovered five and a half gunny bags
of cannabis sativa, which were secured as exhibits alongside the impounded car.
Police said the suspect remains in custody and will be
arraigned in court once processing is complete.
