Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma now says that only former
Prime Minister and ODM leader Raila Odinga has the political muscle to
challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential race.
According to the legislator, Raila remains the only
opposition figure with a national following strong enough to compete against
Ruto when he seeks re-election.
Kaluma dismissed the influence of other opposition leaders,
saying that even if they united, they would not secure more than 15 percent of
the national vote.
“Only Baba, Raila Odinga, can beat President William Ruto if
he runs in 2027. The other so-called ‘opposition leaders,’ working together,
can’t muster even 15% of Kenya’s total vote,” Kaluma said on X.
The legislator, who is a member of the Orange Democratic
Movement (ODM) party further noted that if Raila were to join forces with
President Ruto, the 2027 presidential election would effectively be decided in
advance.
He said that there would be no need for an election.
“We don’t need to spend money on a presidential election in
2027 were Baba to go into a coalition with President Ruto – it would be done,” Kaluma
added.
The remarks come at a time when Kenya’s political landscape
is already shifting ahead of the 2027 polls, with speculation over new
alliances and strategies.
Both President William Ruto and the Opposition leaders have
been traversing the country calling for unity among leaders and the people
ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The opposition led by former Deputy President Rigathi
Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka have been courting others who have
shown interest in leading the country to work together.
They plan on fronting a single candidate in efforts to get
Ruto out of office in the next general elections.
Other leaders in the outfit include former Interior Cabinet
Secretary Fred Matiang’I, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, DAP-K’s
Martha Karua, and Mukhisa Kituyi among others.
