A Nairobi court has scrapped bail terms previously granted to a Cameroonian facing fraud charges after he was rearrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while allegedly attempting to flee the country.
Joseph De Dieu Malachie Krodogo had been released on bond on December 17, 2024, on condition that he surrender his passport.
The court heard that the accused was intercepted at JKIA on August 19, 2025, while en route to Manila in the Philippines using a newly acquired passport. A red alert issued earlier enabled his arrest.
Appearing before Magistrate Dolphina Alego at the Milimani law courts, the magistrate allowed an application by the prosecution to cancel his bail, ruling that he had breached bond terms and remained a flight risk.
“The accused has failed to abide by the court’s guidelines in an attempt to flee the jurisdiction of this court. He remains a flight risk and does not qualify for further bond terms,” the prosecution argued.
Krodogo defended himself, saying he was not attempting to escape but was travelling for medical treatment.
“I am paralysed and was going for surgery. I was to return in five days. If I wanted to run away, I would not have passed through JKIA,” he told the court.
The prosecution countered that he ought to have applied for permission before leaving the country, insisting that “ignorance of the law is not a defence.”
The case will be heard on August 20, 2025, before Court No. 3 at Milimani Law Courts.
Krodogo is charged alongside Ibrahim Wasso and Alhaji Adebyo with conspiracy to defraud a Nairobi businessman of Sh25 million in a fake gold deal.
The three allegedly posed as dealers with the capacity to export the precious metal but failed to deliver after receiving payment.
They were charged with conspiracy to defraud contrary to Section 317 of the Penal Code.
The matter is set on August 20, 2025, for a hearing.
