Families and survivors on Thursday marked the 27th anniversary of the August 7, 1998 bombing of the United States Embassy in Nairobi.

The bomb killed more than 213 people and injured over 4,000 others.

Most of the victims in Nairobi were innocent civilians, workers, students and bystanders caught in the busy downtown area. Only 12 of the dead were Americans.

Almost simultaneously, a second bomb exploded near the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing 11 and injuring at least 85.
