The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a strong appeal to political leaders, urging them to refrain from making statements that could undermine public trust and confidence in Kenya's electoral process.
In a statement released Sunday, the commission expressed deep concern over recent remarks touching on alleged election malpractice, emphasising that such utterances are not only reckless but pose a threat to democratic principles.
“The IEBC assures members of the public and stakeholders that it shall safeguard its independence and impartiality while discharging its constitutional mandate,” the commission stated.
“We remain committed to ensuring free, fair and credible elections in accordance with the laws of Kenya and international best practices.”
The statement follows controversial comments by Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Abdi Jehow, who reportedly claimed that political leaders from the North Eastern region were prepared to rig the 2027 General Elections in favor of President William Ruto.
Her remarks have sparked public outrage and condemnation from several quarters.
Without naming Jehow directly, the IEBC referred to her statements as “unacceptable and reckless in a democratic society,” and urged Kenyans to disassociate from such sentiments.
“IEBC urges all Kenyans to ignore or disassociate with them,” the statement read.
The commission also clarified that no election has been declared, and that there is currently no gazettement or official notice regarding the 2027 elections that would justify political pronouncements of that nature.
“The IEBC has not declared any elections. Further, there is no gazettement or declaration that has been made to warrant such desirous political utterances and propaganda,” the commission emphasised.
In response to the heightened political rhetoric, the IEBC announced plans to constitute the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee, as mandated by Article 84 of the Constitution and Section 110 of the Elections Act.
However, it clarified that the committee's jurisdiction is limited to the official election period.
With the commission now fully reconstituted, it pledged to intensify engagements with political parties, leaders, and other stakeholders in a bid to restore public confidence in the electoral process and build consensus ahead of the 2027 polls.
“As the country prepares for the next electoral cycle, IEBC is committed to constructive dialogue with all stakeholders to strengthen electoral credibility and public trust,” the commission stated.
The electoral body also called on Kenyans to rely on its official communication channels for verified and up-to-date information, directing citizens to its website and social media platforms for credible updates.
