Friends and family of the late Boniface Kariuki gathered today at the Kenyatta University Funeral Home to view his body ahead of his burial.

At the mortuary, mourners stood in small groups, while others queued to view the body of the mask vendor who was shot by police during the recent maandamano protests.

Some mourners stood quietly in disbelief. Others broke down in tears, overwhelmed by grief.

Boniface's mother lay on the ground, crying uncontrollably, as family, friends, and medical staff tried to comfort her.

A few mourners carried the Kenyan flag during the viewing, symbolising mourning and solidarity.

The Sonko Rescue Team, led by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, supported the family by providing a hearse, a white coffin, and covering several funeral-related expenses.

The assistance formed part of a wider gesture to help the Kariuki family during the difficult period.

Around the coffin, mourners sang somber Christian hymns in tribute. The atmosphere was heavy with emotion as those present paid their last respects.

Some family members remained outside the room, too overwhelmed with grief to join the hymns. They wept quietly, surrounded by others offering comfort.

A few relatives, unable to contain their sorrow, collapsed and were assisted by the medical team at the mortuary.

Boniface Kariuki will be laid to rest later today at his family home in Kangema, Murang’a County.
