IEBC elects Fahima Abdallah as new Vice Chair

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially announced the election of Commissioner Fahima Araphat Abdallah as the vice chairperson of the commission.

The decision, according to a statement, was made during the commission’s 288th plenary meeting held at the commission’s boardroom earlier today. 

This marks the first major internal appointment following the recent gazettement and swearing-in of the new Chairperson and Commissioners.

They were sworn in by Chief Justice Martha Koome at the Supreme Court.

It was also the first meeting for the new members who come in at a time when its intray is full.

In a statement to the media, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon congratulated Commissioner Fahima on her new role.

“We are pleased to announce to members of the public and stakeholders that the Commission has unanimously elected Commissioner Fahima Araphat Abdallah as the Vice Chairperson," he stated.

"The Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening Kenya’s democracy.”

The announcement signals growing momentum within the Commission to restore full operational capacity and prepare for upcoming electoral obligations.

This includes pending by-elections and the 2027 General Election.

Commissioner Fahima brings to the role years of experience in public service and governance.

Her election is expected to bolster confidence in the Commission’s leadership structure as it seeks to deliver credible and transparent elections.

The IEBC also used the opportunity to assure Kenyans and stakeholders of its commitment to its mandate.

"We assure members of the public and our stakeholders that the Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening Kenya's democracy," said Ethekon.
