The city mask vendor who was shot during Tuesday's protest in Nairobi is currently undergoing surgery, with an intensive care unit (ICU) bed prepared for post-operative care.
Speaking on Tuesday, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth confirmed that the patient is in the operating theatre with a neurosurgical team.
“As we speak, the patient is in theatre with the neurosurgical team,” Dr. Amoth said.
“As a precaution, we have prepared an ICU bed because a case of such nature requires ICU support immediately in the post-surgery period.”
The hawker was shot during demonstrations in the Nairobi CBD that turned chaotic as protesters clashed with police.
The protests were linked to growing calls for accountability following the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
Medical authorities have not yet disclosed the full extent of the hawker’s injuries, but the involvement of neurosurgeons and the ICU preparation indicate a serious condition.
Further updates on the patient's condition are expected once the surgery is complete.
