President William Ruto looks on as residents enlist for the Soweto Affordable Housing Project in Kibra, Nairobi on May 23, 2025/PCS
President William Ruto has announced a two-day extension of the ongoing enumeration of residents that will benefit from the Kibera's Soweto C and D Affordable Housing Projects in Nairobi’s Kibera.
The exercise, which was to conclude Saturday, according to Ruto, has so far seen more than 11,000 people registered.
“This exercise was to end Saturday, but I have been informed there are still a lot of people left out, so I have directed that it should continue for the next two days until everyone is captured,” he stated.
Those already enlisted are given Makao Bora cards that will be used as proof of enumeration during the allocation of houses and assurance of being a beneficiary once the project is complete.
Ruto made the remarks Friday during a site inspection visit of the ongoing Soweto B project. Its construction was officially launched in October 2022.
This was the third time he is visiting the site to inspect the progress. The project, consisting of 4,054 units, will be completed in January 2026.
Ruto stated that his target is to ensure that by May 2026, people will have moved into the houses.
“I will put pressure on the contractor so that by next year I relocate the people into these new houses,” he said.
The Head of State announced that the construction of the Soweto C and D houses, which he said will create more jobs for the youth from the area, will commence soon.
He expressed his commitment to transforming Kibera slum into an estate, noting
“We are not going to do slum upgrading here, we are going to do slum eradication.”
Ruto was accompanied by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Langata MP Phelix Odiwuor, among others.
Soweto B is among several ongoing projects in the country at different levels of execution, with a total of 112,405 units in the pipeline.
The project which comprises 18 blocks and will also cater to supporting internal infrastructure and amenities.
