Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has held a bilateral meeting with Director General of the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) Jerome Kim, to advance partnerships in vaccine research, development and manufacturing.
During the meeting on Wednesday, Duale proposed a Regional Centre of Excellence for Biomanufacturing Workforce Development, seeking IVI's support in design and resource mobilisation
“We explored Kenya's ambition to become a regional vaccine hub, with key focus on co-developing at least two proposals under the Africa Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA) and the Advancing Vaccine End-to-End Capabilities (AVEC) targeting endemic diseases like Rift Valley Fever, Chikungunya and Dengue by 2025,” he said.
He also urged for expanded Kenyan participation in the Global Training Hub for Biomanufacturing (GTH-B) and fast-tracking of the Host Country Agreement (HCA) to kick-start joint activities within 60 days of signing.
Duale also attended a high-level
Ministerial Consultation Forum convened by Africa CDC Director General Jean
Kasey,to asses Africa’s journey toward health self-sufficiency.
Duale said that it’s the country’s ambition to be a regional vaccine hub.
He underscored the urgency of the Africa CDC's "New Public Health Order" and called for expanded local production of vaccines, diagnostics and essential medical supplies; lessons we must act on post-COVID-19.
Additionally, he spotlighted President William Ruto's appointment as AU Champion for Local Manufacturing, a timely boost for Africa's Continental Pooled Procurement Mechanism and the drive for vaccine self-reliance.
“I urged five bold
actions: Buy African, source locally, diversify production, operationalise
pooled procurement and build sustainable manufacturing systems,” the CS said.
The CS also noted that currently, the only money available was Sh3.5 billion.
