The National Police Service has revealed that some of the suspects arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were are members of an organised criminal gang known as “Mjahidin.”

According to a press release issued on Sunday, May 4, the gang has been linked to armed robberies in the Eastlands area of Nairobi.

"Some of the suspects arrested are members of organised criminal gangs, such as "Mjahidin", which has been linked to armed robberies in the Eastlands area of Nairobi," Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said.

NPS said the arrests were made after officers conducted an operation based on previously obtained leads.

"The suspects had been positively placed at the scene of the crime, and investigators have since recovered crucial evidence connected to the perpetrators," Nyaga said.

"Investigators and technical teams are continuing to work tirelessly to establish the motive behind the shooting and to bring all those involved to justice."

Authorities urged the public to remain calm and refrain from speculation as investigations continue.

On Sunday morning, detectives handling the probe said they had a suspect in custody and had also recovered a car that the suspect and his accomplices were using in their mission.

The car was used in escaping from the scene after the shooting near City Mortuary along Valley Road, detectives said.

The same car has been captured on security cameras near Parliament Building, City Hall Way, Wabera Street, Kenyatta Avenue, Jakaya Kikwete Road, Argwings Kodhek Road and Valley Road.

These are the same roads the MP used from Parliament before he was shot and killed at point-blank range.

Were was gunned down in Nairobi on April 30 by unknown assailants riding on a motorcycle near the City Mortuary roundabout at around 7:30 p.m.

On Thursday, the National Police Service said the fatal shooting of the Kasipul Member of Parliament appears to have been both “targeted and predetermined”.
