The Director of Criminal Investigations now says that detectives have narrowed down to potential suspects in the gruesome murder of Kasipul MP Ongóndo Were.
In a statement on Friday, the DCI said this followed a thorough examination and reconstruction of the MPs last moments from Parliament to where he was shot dead.
The sleuths said they now have significant leads on who the perpetrators of the heinous act could be and are pursuing all possible angles.
“This detailed analysis has yielded significant leads, enabling investigators to narrow down to potential suspects. While the motive for this heinous act remains under investigation, preliminary investigations suggest that this was a targeted and premeditated act. The DCI is pursuing all angles to uncover the circumstances surrounding this incident,” the DCI said.
The detectives have called for calm from the public as they carry out their investigative duties.
They also urged the public to refrain from speculation, even as they called on anyone with information that can help with the probe to report to the nearest police station or call the DCI directly.
“We are committed to holding those responsible accountable and delivering justice to Hon. Were's family and the nation.
“We appeal to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the nearest police station or use our toll-free lines: 999, 112, or #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203).”
Were was gunned down in Nairobi on April 30 by unknown assailants riding on a motorcycle near the City Mortuary roundabout at around 7:30 p.m.
In what now appears to be a chilling premonition, the MP had appealed to security agencies to protect him, stating that he was being trailed.
On Thursday, the National Police Service said the fatal shooting of the Kasipul Member of Parliament appears to have been both “targeted and predetermined”.
Police said according to eyewitnesses, a motorcycle carrying a rider and a pillion passenger stopped alongside the car.
“The pillion passenger approached the vehicle and fired shots at the passenger side before jumping back onto the motorcycle and speeding away,” police said.
The driver of the car and a male passenger, both unhurt, managed to rush the injured MP to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
