Mombasa residents using the Nyali Bridge for their daily commute have been warned of closure from 7.30 am on Wednesday.
The bridge will be closed for four hours to bring down the collapsing tower near Coast General.
An area of 1.2km from that building will be out of access.
The areas include the Marikiti Market area, all along Jomo Kenyatta Avenue to Sabasaba, then up Ronald Ngala to the bridge.
“Anyone of us residing over Nyali Bridge and intending to be on the Island before noon on Wednesday April 9, 2025, make sure to have crossed the Bridge by 07.00 am, Nyali Bridge will be closed from 7.30 am to allow for a four-hour operation intending to bring down the collapsing tower near Coast General,” a statement reads.
“Please be guided accordingly.”
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir said the move is in the interest of public safety and to facilitate the smooth conclusion of the ongoing exercise.
The county further ordered the temporary closure of all schools within the prescribed vicinity tomorrow.
Vehicle owners residing within Mombasa Island have been encouraged to park at Mama Ngina and RG Ngala Grounds to avoid damage to windscreens.
The governor said that motorists will park their vehicles free of charge.
“We thank all residents for their continued cooperation and understanding.”
Nassir said the decision to demolish the building was arrived at following a comprehensive assessment by a multisectoral agency team comprising the County Department of Lands, Urban Planning and Housing, the National Building Inspectorate, the County Security Team, the National Construction Authority, the State Department of Public Works, and the KDF.
He said the building exhibited severe foundational compromise due to unapproved borehole drilling into the foundation, with ground floor columns collapsing by approximately three meters.
"The building has been declared structurally unsound and poses an imminent risk to life and property. In light of this, a controlled demolition has been scheduled to avert potential catastrophe," Nassir said.
