At least two people were killed, and several others were
injured after a school bus and matatu collided head-on at Kimalany Bridge,
along the Molo-Keringet road Friday evening.
Molo Sub-county police commander Timon Odingo said that the
evening incident happened when the Nissan matatu heading towards Molo rammed
into the school bus that was taking students back home towards Keringet.
“We are investigating the tragedy,” he said.
Eyewitnesses said that the impact from the accident was so
intense that the matatu's bonnet was completely trapped inside the bus.
Some of the injured were rushed to the subcounty hospital,
while others were taken to Nakuru PGH hospital for specialized medical
attention, as the deaths are suspected to rise.
The same spot has claimed lives in the past, prompting the
locals to raise concern over the state of the road and urging the road agency to
intervene.
The ongoing rains in the area could be blamed for the poor
visibility and stability on the road.
Two weeks ago, all 14 occupants of a Nissan matatu died on
the spot after a lorry lost control and rammed into it at Migaa near Salgaa,
along Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.
The highway which was a death trap for most of the motorists, underwent new interventions, including the erection of a separation grid to
divide the traffic.
The move has significantly reduced the accidents along the
stretch, remembered for the worst accident at Sachangwan that saw a loss of
more than 130 people due to a fire incident after locals went to scoop fuel
from a tanker that fell.
The government was further forced to expand and separate the
lanes along the Ngata bridge-Sobea stretch in Rongai subcounty after a similar
spike in accidents was witnessed.
More measures are being implemented to address the incidents.
