The construction of the Gitaru Interchange in Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County, is progressing steadily.

The government says the projects will be major relief for thousands of motorists who rely on the heavily congested Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.

"The construction of the Gitaru Interchange in Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County, is progressing steadily and is set to bring lasting relief to traffic challenges in and around Kikuyu town," PS Omollo said.

"Undertaken by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the project is designed to address persistent congestion at one of the busiest junctions along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway."

"Once complete, the interchange will streamline traffic flow, improve access to and from Kikuyu town and enhance overall connectivity between Nairobi and the central and western regions of the country," PS Omollo said.

According to PS Omollo, for years, bottlenecks on the highway have slowed movement, disrupted daily commutes, and strained local transport networks, but soon that will be a thing of the past.

"The result will be more efficient travel, reduced travel time for motorists and improved mobility for residents and businesses that depend on this critical corridor," Omollo said.

Last year, the National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah announced that the government was prioritising works at the crucial link to ease the flow of traffic.

In a statement on his X account, Ichung'wah said the Gitaru Interchange plays a vital role in facilitating the daily movement of countless commuters and vehicles.

The Kikuyu MP said the heavy traffic volume has led to persistent congestion, creating a significant bottleneck in the region's transportation network.

"Recognising the urgent need to address this issue, the relevant authorities have allocated resources, and the contractor has already begun working on the site," Ichung'wah said.

Ichung'wah said the intervention is a collaborative effort to alleviate the extensive traffic congestion that has long plagued the Gitaru Interchange, impeding the smooth flow of vehicles and causing inconvenience for commuters.

"Once the project is completed, a transformative change is expected," he stated.

The project is being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), which says the interchange is crucial to fixing persistent congestion at a key junction along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.

In July, KeNHA issued an advisory noting that the ongoing works would continue to cause traffic disruptions around the area until at least August 11, 2025.

Motorists were urged to follow diversion signs, comply with police instructions, and use alternative routes provided by the agency.

“Those travelling from the Western Bypass to A8 (Waiyaki Way) are advised to use the Muguku Interchange and proceed through the Kikuyu Link Road to rejoin A8 at the Sigona Golf Club junction,” said KeNHA official Stephen Ndung’u.

The Gitaru Interchange is expected to not only ease pressure on the highway but also boost economic activity by improving mobility for residents and businesses in Kikuyu and surrounding areas.

Once complete, the project will add to a series of infrastructure upgrades around Nairobi aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving transport efficiency across the region.
