Four MPs from Kisii and Nyamira
Counties on Friday vowed to remain steadfast in their support for President
William Ruto’s bid for a second term.
The MPs led by National Assembly Chief
Whip Sylvanus Osoro, Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Donya, her Nyamira counterpart
Jerusha Momanyi, Zaheer Jhanda (Nyaribari Chache), and Essy Okenyuri (nominated)
said they are confident Ruto will clinch a second term in 2027.
Without naming him, the MPs termed
former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi’s bid for President a non-starter.
“If we defeated Raila Odinga when he
was enjoying state support, what makes one think that we can lose now when he
is President?” wondered Osoro, the South Mugirango MP.
The MPs spoke at Riana in Bonchari
constituency, where they launched an electricity project that will benefit 300
locals.
The project is being implemented by
the National Rural
Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) and by Donya through the National Government Affirmative
Action Fund (NGAAF).
"We shall not be cowed by empty threats and rhetoric from some opposition leaders who achieved little of nothing during their tenure in government. What our people need is development, not antagonistic and tribal politics," added Osoro.
He said some opposition leaders cannot sustain presidential campaigns.
“I have seen some opposition leaders attend one funeral and a church service per week. How can those people beat President Ruto, whose teams are currently in 15 parts of this country,” he wondered.
Osoro welcomed the decision by Kisii Governor Simba Arati to support President Ruto’s bid for a second term.
“Even though I don’t agree with Arati on many issues, I welcome him to Team Ruto. Let him join us in our bid to help our people get more development projects,” remarked Osoro.
Jhanda told the Kisii community not to be swayed and stay in government to realize development.
“The government has done a lot in the last three years. Despite the noise from cartels and their surrogates, SHA is working,” added the MP.
On her part, Momanyi said President Ruto’s regime needs a second term.
“We are remaining with two years. Let us gauge President Ruto’s performance in 2027. For now, he is doing a good job. The university fees have been reduced by up to 50 per cent,” she added.
Donya further noted that despite being a Wiper Democratic Party MP, she has resolved to support President Ruto.
“Our people need development and the only way we can realise
that is through the government of the day,” she said.
