The Kabonyo Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Center of Excellence (KRFACE) in Nyando Sub-county, Kisumu County, is making significant progress despite initial setbacks caused by flooding, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has said.
Speaking on the project's status, PS Omollo reaffirmed the government's commitment to transforming Kenya’s blue economy through enhanced aquaculture production, research, and training.
Launched in October 2023 by President William Ruto, the initiative is now in its first phase, focusing on securing the facility. Already Concrete poles, PVC chain-link fencing, and gates are being installed to enhance security.
Additionally, the 10km Korowe-Nyang'ande-Kabonyo road is under proposal to be upgraded to bitumen standards, improving accessibility to the centre.
The rehabilitation of existing infrastructure is also ongoing, with office blocks, residential houses, toilets, and bathrooms undergoing renovations.
The hatchery is being repurposed into a store, and a biodigester is being installed to support efficient waste management.
To bolster security and power supply, electricity is being extended to the site, complemented by solar floodlights, mast lights, and surveillance cameras.
Meanwhile, aquaculture units and water systems are being upgraded to enhance fish production. PS Omollo noted that an initial workforce, including supervisors, production crews, security personnel, coxswains, and drivers, has been deployed.
Administrative functions have also been strengthened with new office furniture and a dedicated maintenance team.
Crucially, he added that master planning, architectural designs, and an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) are underway to guide future expansions.
"The government is keen on ensuring that this facility meets international standards and significantly contributes to the country’s fisheries sector," PS Omollo stated
Once completed, the Kabonyo Centre is expected to be a key pillar in aquaculture development, positioning Kenya as a leader in sustainable fish farming in the region.
