Five community groups in Lari constituency have received Sh500,000 in grants under the National Government Affirmative Action Fund to support income-generating projects and strengthen grassroots development.

Each of the five groups received a non-refundable grant of Sh100,000 during an empowerment programme led by Kiambu Woman Representative Anne Wamuratha.

The lawmaker said the initiative is designed to help organised groups expand their economic activities and become financially independent.

"The NGAAF programme is focused on empowering communities through practical support that creates lasting economic opportunities rather than temporary interventions," Wamuratha said.

The beneficiaries were Kamuchege people with disability self-help group, Gatamaiyu blessed welfare group, Escarpment Mwihoko self-help group, Kamukombi-ini Pioneers self-help group and Team Rui self-help group.

Wamuratha said the grants will enable the groups to invest in productive ventures, improve livelihoods and create sustainable sources of income.

"We want to equip organised groups with the resources they need to grow their businesses, create jobs and improve household incomes through self-reliance," she said.

The empowerment programme was also extended to Nyanduma ward, where traders, artisans and small business owners received equipment tailored to their enterprises.

Among the items distributed were market umbrellas, salon sinks, nail technicians' chairs, UV nail curing machines, blow dryers, hair dryers, barber chairs and electric shaving machines.

Food vendors received chips fryers, juice-making machines, chafing dishes, eggs and smokies trolleys, while market trolleys were issued to help traders move goods more efficiently within trading centres.

Boda boda operators received safety helmets and motorcycle umbrellas, while entrepreneurs operating car wash businesses were issued with car wash machines.

Persons living with visual impairments received white canes to enhance their mobility and independence.

Wamuratha reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring NGAAF resources continue reaching women, youth, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups across Kiambu.

"Economic empowerment remains one of the most effective ways of improving living standards and reducing poverty, and we will continue supporting deserving communities across the county," she said.

Beneficiaries said the grants and equipment will help them expand their businesses, improve productivity and increase their incomes.
