For years, students of Kiamurunga Secondary School in Kirinyaga County faced a simple, persistent, but painful challenge to gather, eat, and meet every time it rained, while school assemblies had to be cancelled.

Parents squeezed under trees or makeshift tents during school meetings. Learners ate their meals in scattered corners of the compound, struggling to maintain hygiene.

That long wait for dignity and order ended this week when a modern dining hall was officially opened at the school.

The facility, which can accommodate more than 250 students, was built using NG-CDF funds over two financial years and was launched by Hon. Mwangi Kiunjuri, MP for Laikipia East, alongside the area legislator Hon. Gachoki Gitari.

The School Principal, Nancy Murithii Ngechuu, could not hide her joy as she welcomed the guests.

“This hall signifies more than just a building. It is a solution to a longstanding challenge for our learners and parents. We now have a proper place for meals, for assemblies, and for meetings. Above all, it will help us maintain better hygiene and discipline in the school,” she said.

The impact of the new facility will extend beyond the school gates. Hon. Gachoki Gitari noted that the hall will also be a resource for the local community.

“This dining hall is not just for students, it will also serve the people of Kimuruga when they have functions. And to empower our women’s groups, today I am donating 10 tents of 100-seater capacity each, plus chairs. This will make it easier for them to host events in their villages,” Gitari said.

MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, the chief guest, urged students to remain focused on their studies, reminding them that education is the only sure foundation for their future careers.

“This hall should motivate you. It should remind you that you are supported and that leaders and parents believe in you. Work hard, focus on your books, and the future will reward you. To parents, I urge you to continue walking with the government and the schools to shape these young lives,” he encouraged.

For the learners, the joy was evident. Mary Wanjiku, a Form Three student, described the dining hall as a dream come true.

“Sometimes we ate under trees, even when it was cold. It was uncomfortable, and during rainy days we had to stand until the weather cleared. Today, sitting inside this beautiful hall, I feel proud of my school,” she said.

Parents also welcomed the project, saying it had restored dignity to the school community. Peter Mwangi, a parent, affirmed.

“We used to sit in the open sun during meetings, and it was very difficult when it rained. This hall is a blessing, not just to our children, but also to us as parents. It shows that our leaders are listening,” he said.
